Maca root is an ancient superfood used by Peruvians. It grows in the high plateaus, 13,000 - 15,000 feet above sea level, of Peru’s Andean mountains where it has been used for centuries as a staple part of the native diet and medicinal remedies. Its wide range of benefits are suited for:
Maca is known as an adaptogen, similar to licorice, ginseng, and holy basil. It helps to increase the body’s resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety, and fatigue. Adaptogens are proposed to have a normalizing effect on the body and to be capable of either toning down the activity of hyperfunctioning systems or strengthening the activity of hypofunctioning systems. It also has the ability to balance and stabilize energy flow within the body. In addition, maca can provide energy on 'as needed' basis, but will not overstimulate the body if energy reserves are sufficient. If addressing a specific symptom is not required, adaptogens will improve the adaptability of the whole body by boosting the immune system. *Maca root has excellent nutritional value. *High Protein content to Low Fat ratio makes it an excellent addition to a diet based in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. *Maca contains two of three essential fatty acids (oleic and linoleic) and has a complex amino acids profile containing a total of 18 amino acids, including 7 of the 9 essential amino acids. *Contains 60-75% carbohydrates, 10-14% protein, 8.5% fiber, and 2.2% lipids. The protein content of maca exists mainly in the form of polypeptides and amino acids (including significant amounts of arginine, serine, histidine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, valine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and threonine). *Maca contains sterols (about 0.05% to 0.1%) and other vitamins and minerals. In addition to its rich supply of essential nutrients, maca contains alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. See below for a complete profile. |
